Judge Rules Ortiz Competent to Stand Trial

Los Angeles — A judge has ruled that Ivanna Ortiz, the 36-year-old woman accused of opening fire at Rihanna's Los Angeles home, is mentally competent to stand trial. The decision, handed down Tuesday by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi, restores criminal proceedings that had been paused while questions about Ortiz's mental fitness were reviewed.

Judge Cavalluzzi ordered Ortiz to return to court on Wednesday as the case moves forward. The ruling clears the way for prosecutors to continue pursuing a slate of serious charges connected to the March 8 incident on the singer's property in the affluent Beverly Crest area – a neighborhood known for its hillside estates and Hollywood proximity.

"The court finds Ms. Ortiz competent to proceed and has reinstated criminal proceedings," Judge Maria Cavalluzzi said, according to court records.

What Prosecutors Say Happened at the Property

Details of the March 8 incident

Authorities say Ortiz faces one count of attempted murder tied to the attack on the Umbrella singer, plus 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. She is also charged with two counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and one count of shooting at an inhabited vehicle, among other counts stemming from the March 8 shooting.

Prosecutors have said Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Fenty, and her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky (Rakim Mayers), were in an Airstream trailer on the sprawling property when the shots were allegedly fired. Rihanna told police she heard rounds striking the trailer, then opened the curtains to see bullet holes in the windshield in front of where she had been standing.

Damage and danger at the scene

Police said roughly 20 rounds were fired. In addition to hitting the Airstream trailer, bullets struck a patio area and a nursery room wall inside the residence. Bullet holes were also discovered at a neighboring property, according to an LAPD crime summary.

Rihanna says she grabbed A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, and told him they were being shot at as they ducked to the ground before rushing inside to check on their three children and staff. Thankfully, the family and household employees were reported safe.

What Comes Next in the Los Angeles Courtroom

With competency restored, prosecutors can continue building their case on the multiple counts Ortiz now faces. The reinstatement signals the court will resume normal criminal proceedings, including pretrial hearings and motion practice ahead of any potential trial date.

The Los Angeles legal calendar will now track Ortiz's next appearances, beginning with her ordered presence in court on Wednesday. As the case unfolds, residents of Beverly Crest and fans around the world will be watching how the city’s justice system handles a high-profile case tied to one of music’s biggest stars.
