Shailene Woodley’s near-miss with an LA-sized dream

Shailene Woodley says she came almost dangerously close to living a childhood fantasy – playing Mary Jane Watson in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The Motor City actress, now 34 and known for Big Little Lies, says she landed the part without an audition after a meeting with Webb, then filmed scenes opposite Andrew Garfield before the rug was pulled out.

Woodley described the experience during a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations interview released Aug. 24. What felt like a red-carpet-to-Hollywood-moment turned into a puzzling silence when, about a year later, she was told the role had been removed from the final cut.

How she landed the role

According to Woodley, the casting was an almost effortless win – no audition, just a meeting with director Marc Webb. She shot three scenes with Garfield and was excited to step into a part she’d loved growing up.

What happened to her scenes

Then, out of the blue, she was informed she wouldn’t appear in the released film. Woodley says the explanation she received focused on the movie’s already crowded narrative and the filmmakers’ decision to hold off on introducing another major love interest.

“I grew up loving Mary Jane – getting the part felt like a childhood dream, so it was wild when my scenes disappeared. In LA you learn to roll with surprises, but this one stung,”

Why the filmmakers cut Mary Jane

Woodley was told the studio felt The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had introduced a lot of characters and that adding Mary Jane at that point might confuse viewers. The filmmakers reportedly wanted to wait to introduce Mary Jane until after the fate of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy was settled in the story.

As the story goes, since Gwen Stacy dies in the 2014 film, the plan to delay Mary Jane’s entrance made sense on paper. But that follow-up plan never materialized, and the film that would have reintroduced Mary Jane didn’t happen – leaving Woodley’s scenes on the cutting-room floor.

Putting the cut in context – franchise history and familiar faces

Mary Jane Watson has a long live-action pedigree. Kirsten Dunst originally played her in the early 2000s Spider-Man films, while the newer MCU entries nod to the character through Zendaya’s Michelle Jones-Watson in the Tom Holland era. Fans who track the franchise’s different Spidey eras - from Tobey Maguire to Tom Holland - know this kind of reshuffling isn’t uncommon.

Woodley herself admits she can’t be certain of the full truth behind the decision. “I could have been terrible, and they’re like, ‘We can’t do this,’” she said, acknowledging the possibility that it simply didn’t land the way the filmmakers hoped.

What’s next for Woodley - Unabomber and streaming plans

While the Spider-Verse near-miss is one for the books, Woodley has other projects on deck. She’s set to appear in Netflix’s upcoming drama Unabomber, starring alongside Alexander Ludwig as FBI agents tracking Ted Kaczynski. The film is slated to stream Sept. 25, giving fans a chance to see her in a very different role.
