Lilly Wachowski, the visionary mind behind 'The Matrix,' is finding herself in a bit of a Hollywood loop. Her latest project, 'The Hunted' – a thriller packed with an all-trans cast – is hitting a financial wall. Despite initial excitement around the script, potential investors are playing it safe and stepping back from the $10 million commitment needed to bring the film to life.

Wachowski recently shared her frustrations on KCRW's 'The Business' podcast, emphasizing the importance of the project both to her and the broader trans community. "People like it, but they really don’t want to make it because it’s [got a] wall-to-wall trans cast. I have to get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people," she said.

“This is a script that was extremely important for me to write. It was a response to what is happening in the world for trans people, and it gave me a hugely cathartic receptacle to dump all of my anger and rage and frustration into.”

A Passion Project with a Message

Co-written with her partner, Mickey Ray Mahoney, 'The Hunted' is more than just a thriller – it’s a message wrapped in a cinematic experience. Wachowski describes it as a "cathartic receptacle" for the emotions stirred by the current realities faced by the trans community, highlighting the film’s personal significance.

The project, which is in collaboration with Anarchists United and Natasha Lyonne’s Ariadne, is taking creative strides to push forward. To rally support, Wachowski hosted a live table read at Los Angeles' iconic Dynasty Typewriter theater earlier this August.

Creative Solutions and Trans Joy

In true SoCal spirit, Wachowski isn't backing down. She’s determined to find a way to "grab that trans joy with all of my friends," even if it means reimagining the journey to the big screen. "It’s not the thing that I had imagined it was going to be, but the end result is the same," she expressed, hopeful yet realistic about the path ahead.
