Ex-Fiancé's Double Life Lands Him in Hot Water

Move over Hollywood, Arcadia's brewing its own dramatic saga involving political intrigue and a love story gone awry. Yaoning “Mike” Sun, once a staple in Democrat circles, is now swapping his cozy Southern California lifestyle for a not-so-glamorous four-year federal prison sentence. Sun's crime? Playing secret agent for the People's Republic of China (PRC), according to federal prosecutors.

Sun, allegedly once the fiancé of Arcadia's very own Mayor Eileen Wang, has been convicted for his role as an illegal agent of the PRC. While on his undercover mission for Beijing, he reportedly supported Wang's 2022 city council run. "To my fiancé, Mike Sun, who walked streets with me every single day, who is a real leader of me," Wang praised him in a city council meeting before Sun's arrest, as reported by local CBS News.

“Federal law enforcement will not allow hostile foreign nations to infiltrate the governance of our nation’s political bodies,” Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli remarked about the case.

Political Games and Beijing's Influence

Sun's espionage escapades weren't just limited to romantic entanglements. The Department of Justice revealed his activities included aiding a U.S. politician get elected, influencing local campaigns, and aligning American public life with pro-Beijing views. He even requested $80,000 from the PRC for a Fourth of July pro-PRC demonstration in D.C., marking a bold attempt to sway sentiments on American soil.

His antics extended to other American political networks and included tracking political figures and surveilling groups opposed to the Communist regime, like Falun Gong. Sun's primary co-conspirator, John Chen, was deeply embedded in the PRC intelligence network, boasting connections with President Xi Jinping. Chen has already been convicted and sentenced in related offenses.

Local Politics in the Spotlight

While Sun's story unravels, Mayor Wang continues to face scrutiny. Despite denying romantic ties to Sun after his arrest, she later referred to him as a former fiancé, which only added fuel to the fire. She remains resolute in her decision not to resign, despite opposition from political rivals like Sheng Chang, who raised concerns about her fundraising connections.

Wang's campaign managed to out-raise her opponent significantly, with backing from prominent California Democrats like L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis and U.S. Rep. Judy Chu. This financial support has led to further questions about potential influences and motives behind her political success.

As the dust settles on this international scandal, one thing's clear – foreign influence in local politics is no small matter, and Arcadia's political scene will never be quite the same.
