Blake Lively Scores Partial Legal Win Against Justin Baldoni In Hollywood Drama

Blake Lively has snagged a partial victory in her headline-grabbing legal saga against fellow actor and director Justin Baldoni. A federal judge ruled on Friday that Lively can recover legal fees in her defense against Baldoni’s dismissed defamation lawsuit. However, the judge denied her request for extra damages.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman, presiding in Manhattan, rendered this decision following Lively's settlement of her lawsuit accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and retaliation linked to their 2024 film "It Ends With Us." This tale of courtroom drama unfolded after Lively, acclaimed for her roles in numerous films, received no monetary compensation from the settlement. Yet, California's 2023 law shielding sexual harassment accusers from retaliatory defamation suits allowed her to pursue legal fees.

"Ms. Lively is gratified that her lawsuit shows how [the California law] and laws like it create a path for survivors to hold accountable those who weaponize online attacks and retaliatory lawsuits to intimidate and silence survivors,” stated her lawyers Michael Gottlieb and Esra Hudson.

Behind the Legal Curtain

While the exact amount Lively was awarded remains under wraps, the courtroom drama continues to captivate attention. Before settling last month, Judge Liman had tossed out her harassment claims and all charges against Baldoni. However, he left the door open for Lively to sue Baldoni's production house, Wayfarer Studios, for retaliation. The judge observed that neither Lively nor Baldoni acted maliciously during their legal face-off.

Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, claimed, “Ms. Lively was only awarded limited attorney fees for a single claim as part of a case that lasted only a matter of months, nothing more,” reiterating Baldoni's denials of sexual harassment and retaliation.

A Hollywood Lawsuit in the Limelight

Judge Liman’s recent decision underscored that Baldoni didn't meet the legal threshold to overcome privilege protections. In Baldoni’s $400 million lawsuit, he accused Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, of attempting to tarnish his reputation and seize control of the film.

However, the court dismissed the case in June. Liman found no evidence of defamation by Lively, citing privilege protections for any claims she made to a California civil rights agency. He emphasized laws like California’s are there to dissuade plaintiffs from launching defamation suits that "wear down and silence critics."

"It Ends With Us," featuring Lively as a flower shop owner entangled in a volatile relationship, portrayed themes of domestic violence and raked in over $351 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo. Despite mixed reviews, the film’s real-life drama between its stars continues to unfold under Hollywood's bright lights.
