CSU Board Meeting Turns Into Chaos

The California State University (CSU) board of trustees found themselves in the thick of a passionate uproar during their meeting this Tuesday as emotions ran high over a significant lawsuit. CSU, in partnership with San Jose State University (SJSU), recently filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education. The lawsuit challenges findings that SJSU mishandled a transgender volleyball player's case from 2022-2024.

The meeting quickly morphed into a verbal battleground, with attendees disregarding protocol and addressing each other rather than the board. One CSU employee, originally there to discuss budget cuts, shifted focus to counter what she called 'transphobia' among some speakers.

"The fact that I have to get up here and have to say that trans women are women and that's what I have to use my time to do is absurd. Shame on you. Shame on all of you," she declared passionately.

Speakers Take Center Stage

A prominent activist, Beth Bourne, known for her 'save women's sports' stance, took the spotlight to address transgender individuals directly. Bourne’s comments stirred the crowd further as she claimed transgender people were being misled.

"I want to speak to anyone who is listening who is transgender or nonbinary. You've been lied to," Bourne stated, emphasizing the physical harm of cross-sex hormones and affirming parental love.

Meanwhile, an SJSU alumnus voiced disappointment over CSU's and SJSU's defiance against the Department of Education's mandate, reinforcing support for Title IX and the distinction between biological males and females.

Legal and Institutional Repercussions

SJSU President Cynthia Teniente-Matson defended the lawsuit, arguing the findings against SJSU lack a factual and legal basis. She underscored the university's commitment to the LGBTQ community amid the heated controversy.

U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon issued a stern warning, giving the universities 10 days to reconsider their position or face possible federal funding cuts. The tension surrounding this issue is set against a backdrop of deep uncertainty and unrest.

Amid this tumultuous saga, former SJSU volleyball co-captain Brooke Slusser shared her unsettling experience, revealing her discomfort upon discovering she shared her living space with a transgender teammate.
