When you're born and bred in L.A. like Martin Starr, you know a thing or two about soaking up the city’s signature vibes. From his early days in Santa Monica to his star-studded life now in Miracle Mile, Starr has seen it all. You’ll probably recognize him from HBO’s hit “Silicon Valley” or maybe as Bodhi, the lovable weed store owner in “Tulsa King.” Starr's Sundays are a chill ride through his favorite haunts, blending good eats, beach vibes, and a dash of nostalgia.
“What I love most about L.A. is the people and the friends I’ve made over the years,” Starr shares with a grin. “Aside from that, L.A. has some of the best food in the world.”
A Sunday morning for Starr kicks off with a leisurely start, water or matcha in hand. He's all about hitting up John O’Groats on West Pico for a breakfast that’s anything but basic – think seven-grain granola pancakes and a surprising love for cantaloupe. If he’s feeling adventurous, Met Her at a Bar serves up Thai-style fried chicken with waffles to die for.
Fuelled up, Starr and his wife Alex, bassist for Ringo Deathstarr, and their pit bull, aptly named Betty White, lace up for a stroll in Hancock Park. It’s a neighborhood filled with memories for Starr, who spent his school days at Third Street Elementary.
No Sunday is complete without a beach vibe. Starr’s go-to is Cha Cha Chicken by the sun-soaked shores of Santa Monica. Those jerk chicken enchiladas have been a staple of his culinary adventures since he was a kid, and he’s even tight with the owner. After indulging in crispy Cuban fries – always extra crispy – it's time to let the ocean breeze take over with a walk along the iconic Santa Monica State Beach.
After navigating L.A. traffic back home, the evening is a cozy affair. Starr and Alex wind down with jazz, crosswords, and video games before making their way to Uchi West Hollywood for a sushi-infused happy hour. The night wraps with a dessert – on-screen and off – as they tune into “The Great British Baking Show” or “Below Deck.”
As the laughter winds down, the couple reflects on their day, savoring the simplicity that a perfect Sunday in L.A. can offer. It’s a tribute to Starr’s hometown – always vibrant, eclectic, and full of life.
