Megadeth’s leading man, Dave Mustaine, recently took a stroll down memory lane, revealing the pressure cooker environment he endured from Metallica and others during the early days of his band. This revelation, shared with the Los Angeles Times, shines a spotlight on the fractured relationships that ultimately fueled Mustaine’s fierce drive and ambition.
The iconic metal guitarist reminisced about the tangled history with his former bandmates and the obstacles he faced during Megadeth’s rise to fame.
“You know, I had a great time when I was in Metallica, and we did something tremendous,” Mustaine said. “It’s a shame what the booze did, but we were all kids and, aside from Lars, we came from pretty broken families. Lots of stuff has happened over the years, but I felt like it would be great to make everything good with them before we stop. We should be friends. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be friends.”
Mustaine didn’t shy away from addressing the broader industry resistance that marked his career. He openly wondered about his path had one of the world's biggest bands not spent time trying to hold him back. Despite the past strife, Mustaine acknowledged that Metallica no longer played that role, though the memories linger.
“For a long time, it very much was me against the world,” he explained. “It was like, OK, if you’re not with me, you’re against me.”
These candid comments spill fresh light on one of metal’s most notorious rivalries. A feud that’s steeped in a dramatic dismissal which forever altered the thrash metal landscape.
As Monsters of Rock chronicles, Mustaine's abrupt exit from Metallica on April 11, 1983, in New York stemmed from his battles with drugs and alcohol, which had wreaked havoc on his band relationships during a critical juncture.
Mustaine and his former Metallica mates have shared a rollercoaster of reconciliation and renewed tensions. In 2011, Loudwire reported on their reunion during Metallica’s 30th anniversary shows in San Francisco, where they performed together for the first time since Mustaine's fiery departure. Yet peace was fleeting as disputes over songwriting credits rekindled old flames.
The documentary “Some Kind of Monster” gave fans a peek behind the curtain, capturing Lars Ulrich and Mustaine’s efforts to work through their legendary beef. However, as The Mosh notes, Mustaine's relationships with Metallica’s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich remain a mixed bag of reconciliation attempts and fresh conflicts, making their rivalry a defining element of their musical journeys.
