David Ellefson Opens Up on His Megadeth Departure

David Ellefson recently shared his thoughts on leaving Megadeth back in 2021, finding a light amidst the storm of controversy. In a candid chat with Quemar Un Patrullero, the former bassist delved into his relationship with the legendary band's frontman, Dave Mustaine, and how he's moved on from the headlines.

Ellefson, who first bid adieu to the band mentally in 2018, admitted, "My farewell with Megadeth was really in 2018. That was my farewell. That was my farewell tour. I feel like I played on the last great Megadeth record, which was [2016’s] ‘Dystopia.’”

Finding Closure and Moving Forward

Reflecting on a pivotal moment, Ellefson mentioned a specific event that provided closure: "Dave announced from the stage in Buenos Aires in November 2017, he said, ‘We’re gonna go home and start working on a new album.’ So I feel like that was kind of a good closure for me with Megadeth, which is why I’ve moved on and done so much other stuff."

Despite the dramatic exit, Ellefson's mindset seems to be one of liberation rather than resentment.

“I don’t have bitterness in my heart. I almost feel like I was set free to not have to deal with that anymore. Whereas Dave had bitterness toward Metallica, I don’t have bitterness toward Dave or Megadeth. I really don’t,” he shared.

The Controversy and Aftermath

The LA scene buzzed with Ellefson’s dismissal, sparked by a major leak of explicit content in May 2021. The Los Angeles Times reported that his departure was preceded by the release of two explicit videos and intimate messages that brought allegations of misconduct to the forefront.

While the online frenzy led to accusations of grooming, the fan at the center clarified the consensual nature of their interactions. Ellefson defended his side, describing the situation as “private, adult interactions” manipulated to cause "maximum damage to my reputation, my career and family.”

Legal Battles and Continuing Tensions

The fallout didn't end there. On May 24, 2021, Dave Mustaine announced Ellefson’s official exit from Megadeth, citing an already strained relationship exacerbated by the controversy. This marked the end of Ellefson's long-standing role in the band he co-founded in the '80s.

In the aftermath, legal skirmishes ensued. Ellefson brought forth an $18 million lawsuit against Mustaine, claiming royalty rights and co-ownership of the Megadeth name. Although the lawsuit was dismissed, tensions linger, with Mustaine opting not to include former members in Megadeth’s farewell tour, citing behavior concerns.

Despite the rocky road, Ellefson appears to have embraced a new chapter, seemingly unfazed by the Hollywood-style drama that saw him part ways with one of metal's most iconic bands.
