Yo, West Coast fam, if you’re all about that old-school hip-hop vibe, we’ve got some fire news straight from the heart of the scene. De La Soul, the legendary trio that’s been dropping bars since the ‘80s, just announced their first album in almost ten years. The reveal went down last Friday (Oct. 10) at Comic Con, where the remaining members, Posdnuos and Maseo, were chilling with other rap icons like Nas, Slick Rick, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah to hype their new Marvel comic, Legend Has It.
This wasn’t just any panel - it was a full-on celebration of hip-hop culture with a heavy dose of nostalgia. But the real bombshell? De La Soul spilled the tea on their upcoming ninth LP, and it’s clear this project is more than just music. It’s personal, rooted deep in love and loss, especially for their fallen homie, Trugoy The Dove (David Jolicoeur), who passed away last year.
The album’s name, Cabin in the Sky, isn’t just a random pick - it’s a nod to the 1943 all-Black musical flick starring legends like Ethel Waters, Louis Armstrong, and Lena Horne. Posdnuos shared how the title hit him like a wave while working on the tracks, instantly connecting it to Trugoy’s spirit. It’s like something you’d feel cruising down PCH in Malibu, windows down, reflecting on life’s highs and lows.
“I stumbled on this movie title, ‘Cabin in the Sky,’ and it just clicked - I felt Dave right there with me, like he was guiding us through this,” Posdnuos said during the panel.
This ain’t just an album; it’s a mission to keep Trugoy’s legacy alive. Posdnuos got real about how tough it’s been recording without their day-one partner, even pulling Maseo out of a dark place to keep pushing forward. He compared it to a scene from Beat Street, saying they gotta celebrate Trugoy like Ramon - keeping his memory front and center in everything they do.
De La Soul’s last joint, And the Anonymous Nobody… from 2016, snagged a Best Rap Album nomination at the 2017 Grammys, so the bar’s set high. With Cabin in the Sky dropping soon - word is we might hear it as early as November - the streets of LA are already hyped. Could this be another Grammy contender? If their passion to honor Trugoy is any clue, we might be looking at a straight-up classic.
The SoCal hip-hop heads are ready for this one. Whether you’re vibing in Compton or catching waves in Venice, this album’s got that raw, emotional energy we’ve been craving.
