The calm suburbs of Walnut Creek were jolted by the shocking news of former attorney Jonathan Dean Bishop’s conviction. The once-trusted legal professional was found guilty of committing heinous acts against three young girls, with a jury convicting him on 24 counts of lewd acts with minors. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that Bishop now faces multiple life sentences, underscoring the gravity of his crimes.
Prosecutors painted a grim picture of abuse that spanned nearly two decades. The victims, known in court as Jane Doe #1, #2, and #3, suffered at the hands of Bishop from as early as 2004 until 2021. The timeline of these acts is deeply disturbing: June 2012 to June 2021 for Jane Doe #1, February 2012 to February 2021 for Jane Doe #2, and September 2004 to September 2014 for Jane Doe #3. Moreover, the jury found Bishop guilty of sexually abusing Jane Doe #1 when she was under 10 years old.
Adding to the severity of his crimes, Bishop was also convicted of possessing over 600 images of child sexual abuse material featuring two of his victims. These images were discovered on a hard drive seized at Oakland International Airport in December 2023, when Bishop was arrested upon returning from Florida. "The bravery shown by these victims was extraordinary, and their courage made this conviction possible," noted District Attorney Diana Becton. "Our office will always stand with the most vulnerable members of our community and remain committed to holding those who harm children accountable."
The sentences for Bishop carry enhancements due to the egregious nature of the offenses and the vulnerable age of the victims, sending a powerful message about the consequences of such crimes.
