The City of Angels has a way of weaving the most unexpected tales, and Greer Grammer's story is no exception. The "Awkward" actress, now 33, recently opened up about her childhood in a candid chat on Alisha Marie and Remi Cruz’s "Pretty Basic" podcast. It turns out, life with a Hollywood dad isn't always red-carpet glamorous. Greer, the daughter of Kelsey Grammer – the iconic "Frasier" actor – shared her journey of growing up without her father's presence until she was 16.
"The biggest misconception about me, and I never know how to talk about it except to just trauma dump, is that I didn’t know my dad until I was 16," Greer revealed on the podcast. Reflecting on her past, she recounted a poignant moment at age 11 when she encountered her dad at a Blockbuster – not the typical father-daughter reunion.
Greer's story took a turn at 16 when fate intervened at a Christmas tree lot. "My dad left when I was 4, and then I didn’t meet him again until I was 16," she shared. That chance encounter reawakened a connection as Kelsey approached her, asking, "Are you Greer?" The duo began mending their bond over a lunch date in subsequent weeks, slowly rekindling what had been lost over a decade.
“I ran into him at a Christmas tree lot, and he came up to me and said, ‘Are you Greer?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And then he went, ‘I’m – .’ And I was like, ‘I know who you are. Duh.’”
Their meeting wasn't just a one-off. It marked the beginning of a journey to rebuild their relationship, allowing Greer to recall fond memories from her early years, like visiting the "Frasier" set and having her dad watch her school play.
Despite the long gap, Greer shared that she never forgot her dad's presence. "It’s very interesting because I do have very specific memories of my dad from when I was young," she explained, reminiscing about her time on the "Frasier" set and the "Boss" star attending her pre-school play.
Greer admitted that understanding this period of her life is still a work in progress. "Of course, my therapist was like, ‘Do you remember when you knew that your dad wasn’t a part of your life anymore? Did your mom ever sit you down?’" she shared, highlighting the ongoing nature of healing.
Yet, like many quintessential LA stories, this one has a twist of hope. Greer not only restored her relationship with Kelsey but also got to work alongside him in the "Frasier" reboot's second season. The Emmy-winning actor, who is also a doting father to seven other children, recently celebrated the arrival of his latest family addition, bringing joy and unity to the Grammer household.
"The family’s ecstatic," Kelsey shared in a recent interview with People. "We’re all really having a great time. It’s really lovely. We are closer than we’ve ever been as a family, and I’m proud of that."
The story of Greer and Kelsey Grammer is not just about estrangement, but about the power of family ties and the hopeful journey of coming together again in the City of Stars.
