Jennifer's Spotlight: From Dance Floors to the Big Screen

Jennifer Lopez has come full circle in her dazzling career, returning to her roots as a dancer in the recently released film, 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman'. Before her rise to fame as a singer and actress, J.Lo was carving out a name for herself as a talented dancer in the 1990s. She danced alongside the likes of Janet Jackson and MC Hammer, even hitting the stage with the iconic New Kids On The Block.

Fast forward to today, and Jenny from the Block is back in the spotlight with a role that meshes her dance and acting skills. 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman', which opens in Singapore cinemas on November 6, is a cinematic stage for Lopez's talents – she plays the leading lady in an old Hollywood musical that two prisoners use to escape the mundane reality of their confinement.

“I've always wanted to do a musical. It's been a dream of mine for so long,” Lopez remarked during a virtual press conference in early October.

Star-Studded Ensemble and A Creative Vision

The movie, based on Manuel Puig's 1976 novel and its 1992 stage adaptation, was brought to life by renowned director Bill Condon. Known for hits like 'Dreamgirls' and 'Beauty And The Beast', Condon penned the script with Lopez in mind, ensuring it was a perfect fit for her talents. Despite not hitting the mark in the U.S. box office, the performance of the 56-year-old star received glowing reviews, with many hailing it as one of her career-best.

Lopez, who shares a producer credit with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, reflected on how the script captured her childhood aspirations. “Bill sent me the script and I was blown away that it had all the things I imagined, when I was a little girl, that I wanted to do with my life.”

The Art of Dance and Storytelling

In 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman', Lopez takes on a triple role as Ingrid, Aurora, and the mystical Spider Woman, embodying the search for love. It’s a meta film-within-a-film that sees her character narrating the plot to fellow inmates, portrayed by Tonatiuh and Diego Luna.

For Lopez, returning to her dance roots was both a challenge and a joy. “I do a lot of my own shows and a lot of dancing, but I hadn’t done this type of dancing for years and years – kind of that musical theatre, jazz, technical Broadway style of dancing,” she shared.

The film's choreography pushed her to new heights, with Lopez tackling intricate routines in single takes, a testament to her dedication and talent. With a packed schedule that includes more performances in Las Vegas, J.Lo proves that her passion for entertaining still burns brightly.
