Los Angeles is buzzing with drama as city officials rally against Casey Wasserman, the 2028 Olympics chief, urging him to step down. The cause? A slew of emails unearthed revealing correspondence between Wasserman and Ghislaine Maxwell, the former close associate of Jeffrey Epstein. These emails, dating back to 2003, were released among millions of documents by the Justice Department, casting a shadow over Wasserman's high-profile role.
In a heartfelt statement, Wasserman expressed regret over his past communications. "I deeply regret my correspondence with Ghislaine Maxwell which took place over two decades ago, long before her horrific crimes came to light," he stated. The revelation couldn't come at a worse time, with Wasserman steering the ship for LA's grand 2028 Olympic event.
"Having [Wasserman] represent us on the world stage distracts focus from our athletes and the enormous efforts needed to prepare for 2028," Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn emphasized to The Los Angeles Times.
Despite Wasserman not facing any charges related to the Epstein scandal, the heat is on from local leaders. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn highlighted the distraction his continued presence might cause as the city gears up for the Olympic games. Echoing her sentiments, Los Angeles City Council member Hugo Soto-Martinez also voiced his concerns.
"At the same time as Ghislaine Maxwell was orchestrating one of the most notorious sex-trafficking operations in our country's history, she was allegedly romantically involved with the person now serving as chair of LA28," Soto-Martinez stated, urging Wasserman to step aside.
The call for accountability has rippled through social media as well, with Los Angeles City financial controller Kenneth Mejia weighing in on the situation. He voiced his apprehension about entrusting LA's future on such an international stage to someone with ties to Epstein's infamous network.
"Los Angeles cannot trust our financial future to someone connected with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. LA 2028 Olympics Committee Chair Casey Wasserman must take accountability and resign," Mejia asserted in a social media post, adding to the chorus of voices calling for change.
