Just when you thought the Hollywood saga between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni had wrapped, a new chapter unfolds in the Big Apple. The two actors are embroiled in a legal tangle that seems to have more plot twists than a Malibu sunset. Despite a settlement reached last month, Lively's legal team marched back into court on June 1, determined to secure reimbursement for legal expenses and additional penalties from Baldoni. They argue that California law entitles Lively to these payments after a judge dismissed Baldoni’s countersuit accusing her of defamation and extortion.
“This case is exactly why the California legislation exists – to protect those who speak up about harassment from being dragged through endless legal battles,” argued Michael Gottlieb, Lively's attorney.
While neither Lively nor Baldoni attended the New York hearing before US District Judge Lewis J. Liman, the courtroom was far from quiet. Ellyn Garofalo, representing Baldoni, accused Lively of attempting to bypass a canceled trial with this new legal maneuver. Although the specifics of their settlement weren't made public, Garofalo emphasized that Baldoni and his production company hadn't forked out a dime of the $300 million Lively initially sought.
The legal battle traces back to the tumultuous filming of "It Ends with Us," where Lively claimed Baldoni crossed lines with inappropriate comments and pressure for nudity during scenes. Baldoni, who directed and starred in the film with Lively, has consistently denied these allegations. Instead, he argued that Lively's claims were a tactic to wrest creative control of the movie. In a counterstrike, he accused Lively and her superstar husband, Ryan Reynolds, of defamation and extortion.
The judge dismissed Lively's harassment claims on technical grounds, ruling she was an independent contractor on set. Yet, the drama was far from over; the retaliation claims seemed destined for trial before both parties agreed on a settlement. In a rare show of unity, they released a statement recognizing the legitimacy of Lively’s concerns and vowing commitment to a respectful workplace environment.
As the court saga continues, "It Ends with Us" – based on Colleen Hoover’s bestseller – thrives beyond the courtroom, exceeding box office expectations since its release in August 2024. Perhaps for Blake and Justin, the reel life drama may someday mirror real-life resolution.
