Yo, SoCal fam, remember Marissa Cooper from 'The O.C.'? Mischa Barton, the queen of early 2000s teen drama, is swapping the sunny beaches of Newport for the spotlight at Richmond Theatre. She’s making her UK stage debut in a fresh adaptation of James M. Cain’s noir classic, 'Double Indemnity,' and we’re already buzzing with that Hollywood hype.
Barton will step into the stilettos of Phyllis Nirdlinger, a femme fatale with a deadly agenda. Known for her angsty vibes on the small screen, this London-born star is ready to bring some serious LA grit to this tale of deceit and danger. It’s a far cry from the OC’s surf-and-drama lifestyle, but we’re betting she’ll kill it.
Set in the shadowy streets of 1930s Los Angeles - think vintage Hollywood with a side of danger - 'Double Indemnity' follows insurance salesman Walter Huff as he gets caught in Phyllis’s web. Together, they hatch a sinister plan to off her husband for a fat life insurance payout. But, as any good noir fan knows, betrayal and guilt are never far behind in Tinseltown.
This stage version, adapted by Aussie playwright Tom Holloway and directed by Oscar Toeman, promises a 'razor-sharp, atmospheric reimagining' of Cain’s dark story. Holloway, a noir nerd at heart, first crafted this script for the Melbourne Theatre Company, and now it’s ready to slay audiences across the UK and Ireland with that classic LA underbelly vibe.
“I’m beyond stoked to return to the stage and dive into Phyllis’s twisted world for my UK debut - it’s gonna be a wild ride for audiences!” - Mischa Barton
The 'Double Indemnity' tour kicks off at Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne from February 5-7, before rolling through Nottingham Theatre Royal (February 10-14) and Crewe Lyceum Theatre (February 17-21). After stealing the show in Richmond, the production heads to Theatre Royal Brighton from March 10-14, then continues its journey to Dublin, Southend, High Wycombe, Bromley, Manchester, and Cardiff. Mark your calendars, West Coast drama lovers!
Speaking of Richmond, the show will also hit Wycombe Swan Theatre from April 7-11 as part of this epic UK and Ireland tour. If you’re in the area (or just itching for a road trip), grab your tickets at doubleindemnityplay.com and get ready for some old-school Hollywood suspense.
Barton’s no stranger to the spotlight - born in London, she kicked off her career with the 1997 indie flick 'Lawn Dogs' and spooked us all in 'The Sixth Sense.' She’s also flexed her stage chops in productions like 'Where the Truth Lies,' 'Twelve Dreams,' and 'One Flea Spare.' Clearly, this OC alum knows how to command a crowd, whether it’s on screen or under the stage lights.
And she’s not slowing down anytime soon. Mischa’s got indie projects in the works, including 'Murder at the Embassy,' dropping on November 14, 2025. With more casting announcements for 'Double Indemnity' still to come, this is just the start of her latest Hollywood-to-UK takeover. Stay tuned, LA peeps - this is one star who’s still got plenty of Cali heat to bring!
