The sun-drenched streets of Tucson have seen a shadow cast by the troubling disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. As authorities continue the search, the Pima County Sheriff's Department has sounded the alarm about a scam targeting those concerned about Guthrie's fate. On July 14, the department took to X to issue a warning about posts circulating online that featured a QR code soliciting funds. "The Pima County Sheriff's Department is aware of posts circulating about the Guthrie investigation that include a QR code requesting money," the department clarified, urging the public to stay alert and avoid such scams.
"Please do not send money to people you do not know or scan QR codes requesting payment," the sheriff's office emphasized in their statement.
The mystery surrounding Nancy Guthrie has deepened as her disappearance reaches its five-month mark. Guthrie, the mother of "Today" host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen entering her home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31. A haunting detail emerged when police discovered dried blood matching Nancy's DNA at her doorstep. Authorities suspect it's a kidnapping-for-ransom scenario, as several ransom notes have made their way to media outlets. Despite relentless investigation, Guthrie remains missing.
The FBI continues to scrutinize the ransom notes. "Some have been deemed to be extortion attempts without legitimacy," shared the FBI's Phoenix office, underlining the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The case has not just drawn law enforcement’s attention but also led to legal consequences for Derrick Callella, a 42-year-old from Hawthorne, California. On July 2, Callella admitted to harassing Guthrie's family through calls and texts, demanding information about a bitcoin transfer. His actions were aimed at exploiting the family's distress, leading to his guilty plea.
In a bid to find Nancy, her family has increased the stakes, offering a $1 million reward. This is in addition to a $100,000 incentive from the FBI and $102,500 from the Tucson Crime Stoppers hotline. The community is urged to come forward with any information that could lead to her recovery, as the search for Nancy Guthrie continues with hope and determination.
