Pooh Shiesty is making some noise, and we're not just talking about his music. The Memphis rapper is stepping up to claim his impact on Nike's rising balaclava sales, famously referred to as the 'shiesty' mask. During a lively chat on Complex’s "Sneaker Shopping," Shiesty laid down the claim that Nike owes him a nod for the surge in popularity of the Nike Hyperwarm Knit Hood. This head-turning accessory has become synonymous with his name, thanks to its widespread adoption in urban and celebrity circles.
The conversation took off when host Joe La Puma delved into the cultural resonance of the mask. It's become a go-to disguise for stars looking to fly under the radar. Even A$AP Rocky recently confessed, on “The Questlove Show,” to donning the mask for some low-key trips through New York City's bustling subway system.
“When I take the train, I put a Pooh Shiesty on,” Rocky shared. "Sometimes I’m by myself. Sometimes I’m with security. I take the train to keep myself grounded.”
While exploring sneaker culture on the show, La Puma showcased a packaged Nike hood, prompting Pooh Shiesty to exclaim how it's become his unspoken signature. "Come on, man. That’s supposed to be me right there, man," Shiesty pointed out. He wholeheartedly agrees with the mask's unmatched practicality, recounting, "For real, these junks get you through some places, you know? Like he told you, he snuck through the subway. Wouldn’t be able to do that with no regular [look.]"
When asked if he foresaw his style making such a cultural splash, the 1017 Records artist confessed, "Nah, I ain’t think that," adding, "But you know a lot of stuff a man do, a lot of people gravitate to."
The 'shiesty' mask has transcended its roots as mere sportswear, cementing its place in both hip-hop culture and upscale street fashion. With the rapper's name being shorthand for the mask itself, his influence on Nike’s brand presence is undeniable. Shiesty's call for recognition isn't just about credit – it's about acknowledging the cultural wave he's riding and the undeniable mark he has left on the fashion scene.
