Sofía Vergara is all set for an epic summer as the FIFA World Cup rolls into the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Colombian actress is buzzing with excitement, even teaming up with Owen Wilson in a Telemundo commercial to hype up the global event. But amidst all the thrill, Sofía's facing a family dilemma as she figures out who gets to join her in the stands.
For Sofía, the World Cup isn't just about soccer – it's a chance to bond with family. "It's been good and bad because, like, for example, I'm going to be able to watch some games with them together," she shares with PEOPLE. "We're going to be able to do what we do when we come together, which is eat and put together the family and everything." However, the challenge of selecting which relatives score a ticket has added a twist to her summer plans.
“It's been kind of like a little bit of a struggle to pick who deserves to go to the World Cup,” says the Barranquilla-born actress, 53. “But it's all been fun!”
The "Modern Family" star already has her travel itinerary mapped out, kicking off with Colombia's first match in Los Angeles on June 12. She'll make stops at several major games, eventually landing at the World Cup Final in New York on July 19. But with so many family members eager to tag along, choosing companions has turned into her toughest match yet.
Adding to the excitement, Sofía's longtime pal, Shakira, is set to light up the stage during the World Cup Final Halftime Show. "I don't even want to name-drop, but she texted me yesterday," Sofía reveals with a smile. "She asked me if I was going to be in L.A. for the games."
When she's not painting the town red with her World Cup tickets, Sofía plans to embrace the games from home, wrapped in the warmth of family. "I'm very excited because I'm sure she's going to give a hell of a show like she always does," Sofía gushes about Shakira's upcoming performance. "And she's very excited to do it. It's going to be amazing. For sure, I'm going to watch her."
For Sofía, the ideal game-day vibe is all about "good food, good music, and good things to drink," surrounded by those she loves. "When you're together, that's when you really get to enjoy each other and eat, and fight, and complain and it's fun," she says with a laugh. From Los Angeles to New York, Sofía Vergara's World Cup adventure is as much about cherished moments as it is about soccer's greatest spectacle.
