Hollywood's Heartfelt Gesture

In a true Hollywood move, legendary director Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have shown their compassionate side by donating a generous $25,000 to support the family of the late actor James Van Der Beek. The couple made their donation through a GoFundMe campaign set up for Van Der Beek's family, following the actor's passing from colorectal cancer. Their donation marks the second-highest contribution to the campaign, coming just behind an anonymous $30,000 donation.

“In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future,” campaign organizer Jason K explained.

A Community Rallies

The campaign, which has already exceeded its $1.5 million goal by raising over $1.9 million, was created to support Van Der Beek's widow, Kimberly, and their six children. Among other notable donors are Jon M. Chu, director of 'Wicked', and 'Dancing With the Stars' alumni Ricki Lake and Derek Hough. Friends and family initiated the fundraiser to help the family contend with medical expenses and secure a stable future during these tough times.

Kimberly took to social media, expressing her gratitude and heartache, “support me and our children during this time,” she wrote, filled with both “gratitude and a broken heart.”

Spielberg and Van Der Beek – A Connection Through 'Dawson's Creek'

Fans of 'Dawson’s Creek' might remember that Van Der Beek’s character, Dawson Leery, was a diehard Spielberg enthusiast, often citing him as his inspiration for filmmaking. From posters of 'Hook' and 'Schindler’s List' to 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' decorating his room, Dawson’s admiration for Spielberg was no secret. The connection runs deeper as Spielberg graciously permitted the use of his films' images for the show.

This connection was highlighted once again during a recent 'Dawson's Creek' reunion, where Spielberg sent a touching video message, saying, “Dawson, you made it. Maybe someday, I will get to have a Dawson's closet.”

Van Der Beek himself had expressed the financial strain he faced due to a "bad contract" leaving him without residuals from the show. In his last months, he auctioned off memorabilia from 'Dawson's Creek' and other projects to cover treatment costs. The support from Spielberg and others not only honors Van Der Beek's legacy but also provides much-needed relief to his family during this challenging time.
