Sydney Sweeney, the 28-year-old star of "Euphoria," recently shared an emotional recount of how her journey to the bright lights of Hollywood cast a shadow on her family's stability. During an episode of the Awards Chatter podcast, Sweeney detailed the financial and emotional strain her acting career placed on her family, leading to a series of hardships.
Sweeney's dreams led her family to uproot from Spokane, Washington, to Los Angeles – the land of glitz and glamour. But along with the palm trees and Hollywood dreams, came the stark realities of L.A.'s high cost of living. "Growing up in a small town, when you come to L.A., like most of you probably know, prices in L. A. are crazy. Not anything like where I came from," Sweeney shared.
The move proved challenging for the Sweeney family, particularly after her father, Steven, lost his job. Financial pressures mounted, leading to bankruptcy when Sweeney was just 16, followed by her parents' divorce. Sydney expressed her feelings of guilt over these events: "My family filed for bankruptcy when I was 16," she said. "They filed for divorce, and I felt like a lot of it was my fault because I had brought them to the city [and] uplifted their entire lives, and I blamed myself for a long time."
Despite the emotional turmoil, Sweeney channeled her self-imposed guilt into motivation to excel in her acting career. "I put a lot of pressure on myself of needing to succeed and achieve all these things so I could put different things back together," she explained. Her resilience and dedication have paid off, allowing her to support her parents individually, although not under the same roof.
Sweeney's story is a poignant reminder of the cost behind the curtain of Hollywood success, and her openness sheds light on the hidden struggles behind her achievements.
