The glitz and glamour of the 2026 Oscars took over the iconic Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, as Hollywood's finest gathered to honor the year's standout films. Amid the usual red carpet dazzle, the buzz centered around hit films like KPop Demon Hunters, Frankenstein, and Weapons gracing the winner's circle. Yet, even among such cinematic grandeur, one name seemed particularly unavoidable: Timothée Chalamet.
Whether it's his high-profile romance with Kylie Jenner or his fierce competition with Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor, Chalamet knows how to keep the spotlight fixed on him. Recently, however, the Marty Supreme star stirred up an unexpected controversy with comments about ballet and opera during a candid chat with Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey.
"I admire people, and I've done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, 'Hey, we've got to keep movie theatres alive,'" Chalamet noted, reflecting on the changing tides of entertainment. Yet, he risked ire by adding: "I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.'"
"All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason," Chalamet quipped, realizing his words might not land as intended.
As the Oscars kicked off, the host Conan O'Brien couldn't resist referencing Chalamet's viral moment, jokingly warning the audience about potential backlash from the opera and ballet communities. "They’re just mad you left out jazz," Conan quipped, injecting a dose of levity into the awards ceremony.
Cameras caught Chalamet taking the jab in stride, sharing a laugh with Kylie, his date for the evening. It seems the star, who's no stranger to Hollywood's dramatic tides, knows how to handle a little Malibu-style drama with grace.
Despite the controversy, the Oscars night rolled on, celebrating the best of the best in film, while Chalamet and his peers basked in the LA limelight.
