Iconic Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani, the mastermind behind the luxurious Valentino label, has left us at the age of 93. The news was shared with the world on January 19, 2026, via Instagram by his foundation, marking the end of an era in haute couture.
“Our founder, Valentino Garavani passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones,” read the heartfelt statement from his foundation, posted alongside his official Instagram account.
Valentino's elegant farewell will take place at PM23 in Piazza Mignanelli 23, with the lying in state scheduled for Wednesday, January 21st, and Thursday, January 22nd, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. His final send-off will occur on Friday, January 23rd, at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome, starting at 11:00 AM.
Born in Voghera, Italy, in May 1932, Valentino's journey into fashion is a tale of passion and dedication. After studying fashion design in Milan and Paris, he honed his craft under the tutelage of legendary designers like Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Jean Dessès, and Guy Laroche. It wasn't long before he opened his own house of fashion in Rome, partnering with Giancarlo Giammetti, his romantic partner of 12 years.
Valentino's creations have dazzled the influential elite and graced the red carpets of Hollywood. Known for his signature "Valentino red," his gowns have been adorned by stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie Kennedy. The brand's appeal has endured through the decades, becoming synonymous with elegance and sophistication.
Throughout his illustrious career, Valentino accumulated numerous accolades, including the Knight of the Legion of Honour and the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement. In a candid 2007 interview with RTL television, he revealed his philosophy on beauty: “For me, woman is like a beautiful, beautiful flower bouquet... always to please, always to be perfect.”
In 2008, Valentino graced the fashion world with his final haute couture show at the Musée Rodin in Paris, coinciding with a documentary about his life and career. In his retirement announcement, he elegantly stated, "At this time, I have decided that is the perfect moment to say adieu to the world of fashion. As the English say, I would like to leave the party when it is still full.”
Valentino Garavani's legacy will forever be a testament to his vision, creativity, and passion for fashion. His departure leaves the industry a little less vibrant, but his influence will continue to inspire generations of designers to come.
