Jonah Hill, the star who brought the house down in "The Wolf of Wall Street," recently shared his journey from the bustling streets of Los Angeles to the tranquil vibes of San Diego. In a heart-to-heart on the SmartLess podcast, Hill, now 42, detailed his decision to step away from the Hollywood spotlight to embrace a quieter lifestyle with his growing family.
As he welcomed his second child with his wife, Olivia Millar, Jonah reflected on making the move three years ago. "So I live in a very small town in San Diego, and it’s amazing," he said. "My neighbors are incredible people. When we had our first kid, we moved out there three years ago. I wanted to leave LA and raise a family outside of Los Angeles."
“And my neighbour is one of my great friends, Dr. Sean. He never asked [about my job]. He’s here tonight. He never bothered me or was like, ‘Oh, what’s this person like?’”
Despite his new life away from the Hollywood glitz, Hill still manages to keep his career thriving, shuttling back and forth from sunny San Diego to the bustling heart of the entertainment world. He appreciates not being constantly reminded of his celebrity status, cherishing the normalcy offered by his new community.
"[My neighbours] never treat me weird or ask me about my job or anything," he noted with gratitude. Yet, the love for Los Angeles and its vibrant cultural scene runs deep. Jonah fondly reminisces about his youthful escapades in LA's 90s punk rock culture, which shaped much of his personality and creativity.
But, for Hill, family comes first. His love for editing film is one of the few things that can draw him away from his family duties. "I have two kids now. The only thing that could ever separate me from my family is the editing room," he shared with film legend Martin Scorsese during an Interview magazine feature. "I love the writing, I love the shooting, but editing... it’s like dessert every day. Even the problems are dessert."
Jonah's move to San Diego is a testament to his commitment to family and passion for his craft, striking a balance between the demands of Hollywood and the joys of a peaceful home life.
