Kate Hudson is setting the record straight on what it really means to grow up as the daughter of a Hollywood legend. Despite being Goldie Hawn's daughter and Bill Hudson's child, she insists that privilege didn't pave her way. During a recent podcast, Kate shared that her parents, including her mother’s long-time partner Kurt Russell, instilled in her a strong work ethic rather than entitlement.
"I grew up in L.A., where I saw kids coast by with parents who gave them everything," she recalled. "And I had the opposite parents."
"We were clearly privileged kids," she admitted, "but I do think that my parents were so adamant about how none of it belonged to us, like that we didn't earn it, that in order to get a life like the one we were living, we had to earn it ourselves."
Kate's perspective on her upbringing is shaped by her family's insistence on earning one's own success. While some of her peers at the posh Crossroads School in Santa Monica received luxury cars as gifts, Hudson's parents emphasized effort over extravagance.
"You grow up, and you see kids get cars that you're like, whoa. We were the kids—and we're privileged—and we're like, 'Wow, I can't believe their parents bought them a new car," she remembered, highlighting the stark difference.
Both Kate and her brother Oliver followed their parents into acting, but it was important to Kate not to ride on her family's coattails. "For me, I really took that to heart. I was like, 'No, I can't—I will never rely on my parents,'" she said.
A pivotal part of Kate's journey was her decision to keep her father's last name, Hudson, rather than adopting Hawn or Russell. She was determined to forge her own path and not be immediately linked to her famous lineage. "When I first started, I was so happy my last name was Hudson. It was really, really important to me," she emphasized.
Flash forward to the present, Kate is shining brighter than ever. Recently, she wowed audiences at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards in a striking red Prada gown and continues to receive accolades for her work, including a recent Spotlight Award from the Costume Designers Guild.
Reflecting on her career, Kate shared, "If you really want to do this, if you really want to act, you have to put in the discipline," attributing her success to the lessons her parents taught her early on.
While looking back at her career, Kate acknowledges the role of her upbringing and her parents' teachings in shaping who she is today. Speaking candidly on the red carpet at the Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles, she reflected on her journey.
"I think giving advice to my younger self would be like discounting all of the decisions that I made that were also like good decisions — even the mistakes and the ones that were challenging decisions that I made formed everything for who I am right now, so I wouldn't go back and do anything different," she shared.
As she continues to make waves in Hollywood, Kate Hudson stands as a testament to the power of hard work and determination, proving that even in a city as glamorous as Los Angeles, it's the effort that truly counts.
