Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory recently unveiled the quirky backstory of how frontman Ivan Moody became an integral part of the band. Bathory describes the unusual recruitment, which he humorously refers to as a "kidnapping." It all started back in 2006 when Bathory was on a mission to find the perfect vocal match for his band.
Ivan Moody was flown into the sunny vibes of Los Angeles from Denver for what was supposed to be a simple audition. However, what transpired was a whirlwind that would see Moody's stay stretch nearly a month. "We flew him to L.A. in 2006. He lived in Denver at the time, I flew him into town and came to the audition. He had a couple of songs that he wrote the lyrics for already," Bathory shared. "I was 100-percent, this is the guy that has the right attitude, can sing, can scream, amazing performer."
“He’s the guy … He came to L.A., we canceled his plane to get out,” Bathory continued. “First day, we were just looking at this, like, holy shit, he’s the guy. Now everybody understood what I was talking about.”
Bathory's gut feeling led to an impromptu recording session that day, evolving from recording one song to an entire album's worth of tracks. Moody's surprising prolonged stay was no accident. Bathory was convinced that Moody's dynamic stage presence and vocal prowess were the missing elements for Five Finger Death Punch.
With Moody onboard, they quickly found themselves in the recording studio, turning an audition into a creative marathon. Bathory was relentless, working through song after song, eventually canceling Moody’s return flight to keep the music flowing. "Eventually he goes, 'Bro, we are like seven songs in now.' I’m like, 'What? Three more and we have a record.' He’s like, 'Dude, I have one suitcase, I’ve got to go home.' He was in nearly a month now," Bathory recounted.
Before stepping into the LA studio, Moody had already made waves as the lead of nu-metal group Motograter. His raw talent was exactly what Bathory had been searching for to complete the Five Finger Death Punch lineup. The resulting sessions became the cornerstone of their debut album, "The Way of the Fist," released in 2007. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz, it featured "The Bleeding," one of the tracks born from those early sessions.
The album was a commercial success, garnering gold certification and solidifying Five Finger Death Punch’s spot in the heavy metal scene. Bathory, who had assembled the band with meticulous care, had finally found his perfect frontman in Moody, marking the start of an unforgettable musical journey.
This tale of serendipity and determination in the heart of Los Angeles underscores how the band’s roots and Bathory’s vision have crafted an iconic legacy in the heavy metal world.
