It's a story that had the potential to be straight out of a Hollywood screenplay – a former Los Angeles attorney, Sergio Valdovinos Ramirez, found himself at the mercy of his own vices. Entangled in a severe gambling addiction, Ramirez confessed to embezzling over $300,000 from his clients to chase his luck at the tables.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman laid out the facts in a press release dated July 21. Ramirez, 36, pleaded guilty to multiple felonies, including grand theft by embezzlement and writing bad checks. "The defendant duped and deceived his clients of funds that were earmarked for them only to blow hundreds of thousands of dollars of these funds gambling," Hochman said, likening Ramirez's actions to a "house of cards."

Restitution and Consequences

Ramirez will serve a two-year stint in state prison and has agreed to pay $310,000 in restitution, a fraction of what could have been a decade-long sentence. His downfall began in 2019 and continued through 2023, a period during which he actively deceived clients and wrote checks he knew would bounce.

Having been admitted to the State Bar of California in December 2017, Ramirez's career was short-lived and marred by scandal. The fraud investigation led the State Bar to disqualify him from practicing law in April 2023, culminating in his disbarment by October 2024.

The Cardroom Temptation

Ramirez's gambling escapades took place at two iconic LA cardrooms – The Bicycle Casino and Commerce Casino – where he reportedly purchased $886,000 in gambling chips. It's noteworthy that this occurred despite casino closures during the pandemic. California cardrooms operate on a unique system where players can serve as the house, a practice that has stirred legal debates within the state.

Ramirez, who remained free during the investigation, now faces the consequences of his actions, which have left his clients in disbelief and financial distress. The legal proceedings against him underscore the severe impact of gambling addictions, even in the glitzy backdrop of Los Angeles.
