Jennifer Garner's Paparazzi Ordeal

Jennifer Garner recently opened up about the intense pressure and danger that paparazzi posed to her family, cementing her role in the creation of California's 2013 law designed to safeguard children of public figures. On the July 21 episode of "Shut Up Evan," Garner described how the relentless pursuit by photographers endangered her family and led to heightened legal protections.

Garner, now 54, reflected on the challenges of raising her children, Violet, Fin, and Samuel, with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, in the glaring eye of public scrutiny. "It was a danger to everyone around us," she shared.

"If I went through a yellow light, 15 cars would go through the red behind me. They would drive up onto people's lawns, even on a hillside," Garner recalled.

The Push for Legal Protections

The desperate situation Garner faced, where photographers would block her path even to the pediatrician, fueled the push for legislative change. Backed by Garner and fellow actress Halle Berry, the 2013 California law increased penalties for the aggressive harassment of celebrity children and allowed parents to seek civil damages against those violating these protections.

She recounted situations where her children's safety was compromised, such as being unable to enter a building or having their activities disrupted due to the overwhelming paparazzi presence.

Life in the Spotlight: An Ongoing Challenge

Though her children are older now, Garner acknowledges that the paparazzi remain a constant, albeit somewhat familiar, presence in her life. She has developed a unique, albeit strange, rapport with a couple of photographers who have been following her for over two decades.

"We've had some really real-life moments together," she shared, highlighting an incident where she felt safe with a particular photographer amidst a chaotic situation.

In promoting her new Peacock series "The Five-Star Weekend," Garner compared her real-life experiences to her character Hollis, emphasizing the importance of friends when navigating life in the spotlight. "I can tell you, Hollis has it right: You call your friends," she advised, underscoring the value of friendship in tough times.
