Austin's own country crooner, Charley Crockett, has gone radio silent on social media. The move comes on the heels of a dust-up over his decision to drop the self-proclaimed Satanic doo-wop duo, Twin Temple, from his tour lineup. The backlash has been intense, with many fans and critics voicing their opinions loud and clear.
Back in July, LA's Twin Temple – made up of married duo Alexandra and Zachary James – took to Instagram, expressing their disappointment after being axed from two of Crockett's "Age of the Ram" tour dates. Their use of "Satanic imagery" was reportedly the bone of contention. Crockett, unbothered by the storm, shot back, "I thought they were like Black Sabbath, but they ain’t. Not today, Satan," making his stance clear in a Billboard statement.
“I might wake up at 1 p.m. on the back of that bus and find out that the opener ain’t working for me that night. Tough luck. Life is hard. This ain’t no temp agency. Get to stepping."
Just when you thought the gig was up for Twin Temple, rock heavyweight Jack White, famed for his gig with the White Stripes, offered a lifeline. White extended an invite to the duo to join him on stage at the Hollywood Palladium on September 29th. "Twin Temple, Would you like to open my show in L.A. on September 29th at the Hollywood Palladium?" White cheekily asked via Instagram.
Despite the fiery fallout, Crockett stood firm. His once bustling social feeds are now barren, with his last visible post being a nod to Paul Newman from "Cool Hand Luke". Posts that followed, filled with defiance and a sprinkle of controversy, have since been erased. "I won’t conform and I’m not sorry," Crockett declared. "God is the fabric that ties all life together. No need to even define or institutionalize it."
Fans and followers were divided. While some cheered on his stance, others weren’t so forgiving. "Man with each post, you are losing me more and more," one Instagram user lamented, advising him to step away from the digital drama.
While many speculate if this entire episode was a cleverly crafted publicity stunt, one thing's for sure: Charley Crockett's decision to unplug has sparked a debate that's anything but quiet.
