A New Chapter for LA Animal Services

The City of Angels is ready to welcome a fresh wave of leadership as Gabrielle Amster steps into her role as the general manager of Los Angeles Animal Services. With the stamp of approval from the LA City Council in a unanimous 12-0 vote on Wednesday, Amster is set to tackle the challenges faced by the department with a new perspective. Despite the absence of council members Tim McOsker, Nithya Raman, and Hugo Soto-Martinez, the vote reflected a strong consensus.

“The department needs a full-time leader who brings fresh eyes and trusted leadership to the issues we face, and I'm very happy that Ms. Amster is stepping up to the plate," said Councilman Bob Blumenfield.

Councilman Blumenfield highlighted the need for a permanent leader in animal services, especially after years of struggling with leadership gaps. "It's not a secret that animal services has been faced with serious issues for way too long," he remarked, emphasizing the urgency for change.

Amster's Vision and Experience

Gabrielle Amster, who boasts over 19 years of expertise in animal advocacy, is no stranger to the scene. Known for her diplomatic leadership style, she served as the director of the Wallace Annenberg Pet Space and has collaborated with major organizations like LA Animal Services and the ASPCA. Her previous roles span from vice president of shelter relations at DocuPet to executive director of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

In her new position, Amster is determined to take a "deep dive" into the standard operating procedures across LA's six city shelters. Her goal is to ensure effective policies and maintain consistency. Mayor Karen Bass, who appointed Amster following a comprehensive search, lauded her experience and ability to lead with diplomacy.

A Commitment to the Community

Amster succeeds Annette Ramirez, who admirably kept the department afloat during transitional periods. Ramirez is anticipated to return to her role as assistant general manager. Amster acknowledged the dedication of the LA Animal Services staff, volunteers, and adopters, stressing her commitment to investing in the team and holding the department accountable.

"The heart of LA Animal Services is the staff and the volunteers who show up every day," Amster stated, vowing to be a visible and accountable leader. Her plans include boosting programs like Dogs Playing for Life and expanding the spay and neuter budget by 20%. For Angelenos and their furry friends, this appointment marks a new dawn filled with hope and promise.
