Gary Holt Challenges Rock Hall's Treatment of Metal

Exodus and Slayer's fierce guitarist, Gary Holt, isn't holding back when it comes to what he sees as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's cold shoulder towards heavy metal. During a recent chat on The Mistress Carrie Podcast, Holt laid it all out, revealing his frustration with the Hall's alleged bias against the genre that's had headbangers rocking out for decades.

“I personally couldn’t give a sh*t, ’cause the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is fucking lame,” Holt said, boldly questioning the Hall's relevance. “The obvious ones get in, and if you had, like, three Motown hits, you’re pretty much guaranteed of getting in. Iron Maiden’s still selling out stadiums, and isn’t in.”

Holt didn't stop there, taking aim at the Hall’s selection criteria which he believes plays favorites. Pointing to Iron Maiden still selling out stadiums without being inducted, Holt highlighted the inconsistency in recognizing artists across different genres.

Challenging the Hall's Selection Criteria

According to Holt, the snubs aren't just about timing. He argues there's a fundamental bias in how the Hall picks its inductees. “Thin Lizzy had hits. They pioneered twin guitar rock harmonies, and they had just legendary albums," he emphasized. Despite these achievements, bands like Thin Lizzy are often brushed aside, while artists with shorter discographies, like Missy Elliott and N.W.A., are welcomed.

The guitarist didn't mince words about what he sees as a popularity contest. "And Thin Lizzy’s not in there. Judas Priest got in through a back door. Motörhead should be in there," he said, further pointing out that KISS only made it into the Hall after much resistance.

Metal's Long Road to Recognition

Holt's outcry comes at a moment of bittersweet irony. Just as he criticized the Hall's handling of metal acts, news broke that Iron Maiden has finally been inducted into the 2026 class. However, the band won't be attending the Los Angeles ceremony due to their packed tour schedule Down Under, prioritizing their fans and 50th-anniversary celebration over attending the ceremony.

This delayed recognition is a familiar tune for metal's passionate global fanbase. As Blabbermouth highlighted, even genre giants like Black Sabbath and Metallica faced long waits before the Hall acknowledged their influence. Meanwhile, Slayer's Kerry King noted that his band, despite its legendary status, hasn't even been nominated.

Holt's criticisms reflect a widespread sentiment in the metal community about the Hall's apparent reluctance to recognize the genre's cultural and commercial achievements. His stance underscores the ongoing battle for metal to earn its rightful place in the annals of rock history.
