Game-Changing Funding for LA Housing

Los Angeles, CA – Sunny SoCal is getting a significant boost in its fight against homelessness. Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday that over $36 million from California’s Homekey+ program is set to support two major housing projects in Los Angeles County. This initiative is part of a larger push to provide permanent supportive housing for those most in need, riding the wave of voter-approved Proposition 1.

The Homekey+ program, a crucial part of the state’s strategy, focuses on expanding both housing and mental health services, ensuring that those in dire straits have a safety net. One of the standout projects in this round of funding is Amanda Villas in Cudahy, which is pocketing nearly $8 million. This will help complete a 140-unit development, with 69 units specially reserved for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

“Our state investments have launched critical programs for local communities to help get vulnerable people off the streets and into housing and care,” Newsom emphasized in his statement.

Spotlight on Key Projects

Another transformative venture, led by the Los Angeles Housing Authority in collaboration with The RightWay Foundation, is receiving over $12.5 million. This funding will go toward acquiring two newly constructed buildings that will house 33 units specifically for young individuals who are homeless or at risk and living with behavioral health challenges.

Meanwhile, Huntington Villas in El Sereno is undergoing an exciting transformation, thanks to a $15.6 million infusion for converting a motel into 52 supportive housing units. This project is in partnership with the National Community Renaissance of California, showcasing the county's commitment to collaborative, impactful solutions.

A Broader Statewide Effort

These recent funding rounds are part of a sweeping campaign to tackle the intertwined crises of homelessness and mental health throughout California. The six projects announced will add 307 supportive housing units to the landscape, including those reserved for veterans and transitional-age youth. Governor Newsom’s office proudly noted that Homekey+ has now greenlit 50 projects across the state, producing a total of 2,471 affordable housing units and marking a pivotal effort in addressing these critical issues.

As California continues to grapple with these challenges, initiatives like these offer a beacon of hope for communities yearning for change. With the collective efforts of state and local agencies, the goal of moving individuals from encampments to stable homes is becoming a reality.
