In a story that seems fit for an eccentric Hollywood script, Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench unveiled a mischievous episode from her childhood that might surprise her fans. Sharing the tale on BBC's This Natural Life podcast, the 91-year-old actress confessed to a youthful prank that involved a dead rat and an uncooperative neighbor.
During the podcast, hosted by Martha Kearney, Dench shared, "The boys used to play cricket in the garden, and they used to be always batting the balls over into the other gardens, and there was a lady called Miss Lazenby, and she never ever would throw the ball back, or give us the balls back."
"So I did go and squeeze it through Miss Lazenby’s door. Miss Lazenby was rather red about it saying, 'please give us our balls back.' We wrote that message, it was tied on the dead rat,” she recounted.
The cheeky incident took place in York, where Judi grew up with her two older brothers, Jeffery and Peter. The duo, frustrated with Miss Lazenby's refusal to return their cricket balls, cooked up the dead rat scheme. With Judi as the unwitting accomplice, they hoped to retrieve their lost property in a less-than-traditional manner.
While the tactic didn't necessarily achieve its intended goal – as Dench admitted it "probably not" succeeded – it marked the end of her brothers' cricketing days in the neighborhood. Moving on from her rat-posting adventures, Judi Dench rose to prominence with roles depicting British royalty and other iconic characters.
Despite her early escapade, Judi Dench has earned acclaim in a career that spans decades. Known for her powerful portrayals of Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, she won an Academy Award for her brief yet impactful role as Queen Elizabeth I in "Shakespeare In Love." Her impeccable filmography includes playing M in James Bond films and Lady Catherine de Bourgh in "Pride & Prejudice."
With ten BAFTAs, two Golden Globes, two SAG awards, seven Oliviers, and a Tony to her name, Judi Dench remains a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. Her childhood antics in York are a testament to the lively spirit that has charmed audiences worldwide.
