The Vineyard Drama: Settling and Reforming

Get ready for some vineyard drama in Paso Robles! Justin Vineyards & Winery has decided to settle a federal lawsuit by shelling out $1.49 million, promising to clean up their workplace act. The suit accused them of allowing female employees to face some pretty grim scenarios of sexual harassment, only to retaliate when those brave souls stepped up to report it. This settlement was sealed last Thursday, giving everyone involved a chance to breathe a little easier.

LA's Wonderful Co. in the Spotlight

The lawsuit isn't just throwing shade at Justin Vineyards. The Wonderful Co., based right here in Los Angeles and owned by Beverly Hills power couple Lynda and Stewart Resnick, got caught up in this legal whirlwind too. They picked up Justin back in 2010, adding it to their portfolio of fine wine assets – which, by the way, includes a Michelin-starred restaurant. But when it comes to harassment claims, the accusations were as serious as it gets, spanning from inappropriate texts to unwanted touching, according to the allegations.

“The policy changes and reporting to which the companies agreed are important steps in ensuring a workplace free of discrimination," said Beatriz Andre from the EEOC’s LA District Office.

Turning Over a New Leaf

In this whole legal tango, Justin Vineyards claimed they acted "immediately and decisively" the minute the checks started bouncing off the moral compass. Their official statement highlighted their commitment to putting this scandal behind them and focusing on their "incredibly talented team." So, what's next for our wine world moguls? Well, Justin and Wonderful have agreed to some serious workplace reform. They'll be rolling out compliance audits and ensuring no funny business at their vineyard operations.

To sprinkle a bit more history into the mix, Wonderful Co. also stirred some eco-drama back in 2016. They unknowingly cut down a bunch of oak trees to make room for new grape plantings, which sparked quite the uproar. Quick to rectify, the Resnicks apologized and went green by donating the land to a nature conservancy and committing to plant thousands more trees. With such measures in place, it's clear they're desperate to set a better example for their iconic brands.

Acquisitions and Apologies

Aside from the lawsuit, the Resnicks haven't been shy about expanding their vineyard empire. In addition to Justin, they've snapped up Landmark Vineyards in Sonoma County and Lewis Cellars in Napa Valley. For now, though, their focus remains on ensuring a workplace that's free from harassment and ripe for success.
