Prince Harry is back on the scene, urging Britain to find its 'national resilience' during a high-profile event in Birmingham marking the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games. The Duke of Sussex, who famously made headlines by stepping down as a senior royal and settling in sunny California with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, wasn't shy about sharing his message for the UK – and beyond.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning, Harry emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. "I think that when you're really up against it, how you decide to use that trauma, that experience or that loss, how you use that to really grow that resilience in yourself – I think that's where people can connect to it," he shared, drawing parallels between the challenges faced by participants in the Games and broader national struggles.
“And now, more than ever, we need to grow the national resilience here in the UK, but also around the world.”
During the chat, Harry couldn't resist a little self-deprecating humor after mistakenly calling England's upcoming FIFA World Cup quarter-final a "soccer" match instead of "football" – a classic Brit slip-up for someone now living stateside.
The Birmingham event was significant, marking the return of the Invictus Games to the UK since its debut in London in 2014. Harry closed the event with a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the bond forged through shared experiences of service and resilience. "What has struck me walking around the arena today is just how many faces I recognize from those different groups that were part of that original journey back in 2014," he nostalgically noted, playfully adding that "some of us have lost our hair."
Helen Helliwell, CEO of Invictus Games Birmingham, couldn't hide her excitement about Harry's involvement, calling it "fantastic" to have him there. She praised his unwavering support for the armed forces community, adding, "He always brings sparkle and magic."
With the Duke's infectious energy, the countdown to the Invictus Games has certainly kicked off with SoCal flair, even if he left his California crew – Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet – back home this time.
