Katherine “Kat” Torbick, a cherished nurse and mother, met a horrific end in her Schaumburg home, leaving the community reeling. The 43-year-old, described as a caring soul and dedicated mom to a 12-year-old boy, was allegedly raped and murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Kevin Motykie. This disturbing incident unfolded just days after a prior domestic violence altercation that landed Torbick in the hospital.
Police arrived at the scene in Schaumburg, located about 30 miles northwest of Chicago, after a 911 call reported not hearing from Torbick all day. The officers, familiar with a recent domestic incident, forced their way in, discovering Torbick's lifeless body showing multiple signs of trauma.
Motykie, 56, was arrested in the garage, charged with first-degree murder and sexual assault. Prosecutors revealed disturbing details, including a seven-hour audio recording found in Motykie's pocket. The recording captures the intense confrontation beginning at 2 a.m., where arguments, accusations of infidelity, and Torbick’s pleas for mercy are heart-wrenchingly audible.
“I gotta go hang myself,” Motykie allegedly said, as he carried out the attack, showcasing the depth of his intoxication and erratic behavior.
The audio evidence is said to include Motykie's threats to kill Torbick, her cries for him to stop, and the tragic moments leading to her death. The court documents suggest Torbick was bound with duct tape, repeatedly assaulted, and eventually strangled.
Torbick's passing has left a void in the lives of her colleagues and friends, who remember her as a warm, energetic presence. Working over 21 years as a gastroenterology nurse and also serving at Fox River MedSpa, Torbick's legacy is one of compassion and dedication.
The MedSpa shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, stating, "In the short time she was with us, she became a part of our Sisterhood... She made an impact that will not be forgotten – with both clients and teammates.”
As her community mourns, Fox River MedSpa announced they will host a donation-based domestic violence course in her honor, with proceeds going to Refue for Women, an organization aiding victims and survivors of exploitation.
