Shake-Up at LA Unified: Superintendent Resigns

In a plot twist right out of a Hollywood script, the Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District, Alberto Carvalho, has announced his resignation. This comes four months after being placed on paid leave amid an ongoing federal probe – a saga that has kept the LA education scene buzzing.

Carvalho, who took the helm of the nation's second-largest school district in 2022, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. He even requested to be reinstated earlier this year. However, the dramatic turn began when the FBI served up search warrants on February 25 at both Carvalho's home and the district's headquarters. Just two days later, the Board of Education hit pause on his duties, pending the investigation's outcome.

"While the government’s investigation remains ongoing, no evidence has been presented by prosecutors supporting any allegation that Mr. Carvalho violated federal law," stated the law firm representing him.

Behind the Scenes: The Investigation Unfolds

The details of the federal investigation remain shrouded in mystery. Yet, it involves more than 500,000 students who rely on LA Unified. There's also chatter about a third location near Miami linked to Debra Kerr, who once worked with AllHere, a collapsed EdTech firm entangled in fraud charges. In 2024, Carvalho introduced AllHere's AI chatbot "Ed" to help students – but it wasn't long before the deal fizzled out and the company folded.

The Miami Herald buzzed with reports about the Florida property searches, noting its ties to AllHere. The company's founder, Joanna Smith-Griffin, faces serious legal heat with securities and wire fraud charges. Carvalho, however, has distanced himself from the tech company's selection process.

Moving Forward: Leadership and Stability

The LAUSD Board of Education, in its Monday statement, expressed gratitude while accepting Carvalho's resignation, which was effective immediately. "Our focus remains unchanged: providing every student with a high-quality education, supporting our dedicated workforce, and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve," the statement emphasized.

As the district marches forward, Andrés Chait will continue his role as acting superintendent. The Board is in no rush, prioritizing stability and strong leadership over hasty decisions. Meanwhile, LA Unified assures its cooperation with the ongoing investigation, keeping its cards close to the chest.

Carvalho's tenure may have hit a rough patch, but his legacy in Miami and his brief yet eventful stint in LA will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark.
